Die Highlands Games Schottland haben ihren Ursprung im alten Clansytem Schottlands vor über 300 Jahren. Der Clan-Chef ermutigte seine Leute an den Spielen teilzunehmen, um deren Mut, Stärke und Ausdauer zu fördern, vor allem wenn es später in die Schlachten ging. Heute würde man "Training" sagen. Damals suchten die keltischen Könige unter den Gewinnern auch häufig ihre Leibwächter aus. Auch heutzutage ist noch der Wettbewerb-Charakter zu erkennen, wenn auch in wesentlicher entspannterer Atmosphäre. Die bekanntesten sind die Highlands Games in Braemar Anfang Septembers jeden Jahres, Schirmherr ist kein geringerer als König Charles III. Sie sollten sich dieses Spektakel nicht entgehen lassen. Unter Highland Games in Schottland versteht man nicht nur den traditonellen Baumstammüberwurf, Steinstoßen und Hammerwurf, sondern auch z.B. Dudelsackspielen. Insgesamt zählen circa 45 Sportarten zu den Highland Games, die seit 1980 sogar Weltmeisterschaften ausrichten. Heute sind solche Highland Games Volksfeste für die ganze Region. Viele Regionen haben ihre eigene Tradition, was Highland Games anbelangt und überall sind sie etwas anders.
